Encouragement to Our Elders

The Apostle Paul says that we are to highly esteem the leaders of the church in love because of the work that they do (1 Thess. 5:13). Spiritually leading a congregation of God’s people is one of the most challenging, draining, but rewarding pursuits known to man. Spiritual leaders must invest in people and get personally involved in the messiness of their lives. Ministry is messy business. It is emotionally exhausting and pushes you to the limit of your spiritual endurance.

We are extremely blessed to have elders here that are investing their time ministering to people. Also, our elders are courageously leading the way for the future of this congregation. Leaders in the church are often targets for criticism and so they must be strong, bold, and yet compassionate and caring. My friend Matthew Morine recently made the following observations about leadership in the church:

1. Change is always, always, always, resisted.
2. When you are being criticized it means that you are leading.
3. Focus on differentiating yourself over blending in.
4. Expect people to sabotage your progress.
5. Be methodical in your steps, control your actions, and refuse to react to anxiety within the congregation.

My elders, I hear about the visits you are making. I know about some of the counseling that you are doing. I can sense the burden that you are bearing. Brothers, I love you for the work that you are doing. You are making a difference. Do not grow weary in your work. You are advancing the work of God’s kingdom in Spring Hill. Lives are being changed for the better. People are growing in their walk with God. Members are being challenged to change their behaviors to be more like Christ.

You are leading us down God’s path, and we will gladly follow. Continue to blaze the trail in faith and not fear. Our lives are blessed by you and we long for your guidance. You are laying up treasure in heaven. Your work is not in vain. Do your work with joy (Hebrews 13:17), because it is the greatest work on earth!
